A Stitch in Our Time: 15-27 March

An exciting Ilfracombe Museum and Selladoor Venues partnership project exploring, celebrating and remembering the people and places of healthcare in Ilfracombe.

A Stitch in Our Time will feature an exhibition of 16 quilts collected by Threads of Survival. The quilts are a recording of experiences, thoughts, reflections and stories during the ‘Years of Covid’ and the role of the NHS. The quilts also celebrate community spirit, our country side, friendship, family, nature, the environment and all the things highlighted by the pandemic. The quilts will be displayed at the Landmark Theatre Ilfracombe To accompany this exhibition there will also be

  • a new display about the history of the Tyrell hospital at Ilfracombe museum
  • Memory cafe sessions: sharing stories and experiences of healthcare working in Ilfracombe, followed by a ‘memory booklet’.
  • Community textile workshops to create something that reflects the thoughts and memories of the people of Ilfracombe during Covid., including reflections of the past and our hopes for the future. We will source and upcycled fabrics and materials for this project.
  • All these events will be free of charge

How can you help?

We need your stories, photos and memories!

Did you work in health care in the Ilfracombe area? Do you have stories and memories that you’d like to share with the Stitch in Our Time project?

Remembering our Tyrell Hospital through the years, the old maternity unit which is now a care home, the isolation hospital and how nursing and healthcare has evolved through our life times. Remembering the people who worked there and who were patients there. Collecting photographs of these people and places. If you have anything to share we’d love to hear from you!!

We would like to collect photos, stories and memories of anyone who has worked in healthcare in the Ilfracombe area. This can include working within and outside the NHS, and as well as patient care and nursing roles we would love to hear from administrator staff and care home staff.

We will, with your permission, gather these resources at Ilfracombe Museum and the Landmark theatre, and use them to build a more complete picture of the history of healthcare in our town. Some of them might go on display or form part of a Stitch in Our Time project booklet.

To share any photos or stories please email Ilfracombe Museum at or ring the museum on 01271863541. You can also make contact via Ilfracombe Museum’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
