Ilfracombe’s  Faces Of War

This gallery is dedicated to the men and women of Ilfracombe who served in the First World War.

Ilfracombe Museum has a large and rare collection of portraits of servicemen and women which was gathered by the town’s Urban District Council during 1914-18 and was originally displayed during the war, in Ilfracombe’s town hall. The museum now looks after this precious archive, and in 2018, with the support of the Heritage Lottery and the South West Heritage Trust, this exhibition was opened to coincide with the centenary of Armistice Day and as part of the Devon Remembers project. Displayed alongside the portraits are letters and mementos sent home from the front line.

We hope you will find this exhibition both moving and informative. You can also find out more about individuals in this collection by emailing the Museum.
